The Sangha: A Pre-preview!

As the date for the exhibition draws closer (February 24th), I thought of presenting a small preview of The Sangha — the six feet tall bronze sculpture that form the centrepiece of this exhibition. The 12 figures are majestic, and mysterious too — bound together by a common quest, for spiritual realisation.

The Seekers @ India Art Fair

The Seekers

The urge and effort to seek is so quintessentially human, particularly when directed towards spiritual goals. To become silent and to open-mindedly witness is so basic to spiritual seeking. These androgynous, robe-wrapped figures are expressive of the inner experiential textures of the spiritual journey. The First Seeker is in outer stillness and in the experience of uplifting joy that is inherent in true silent witnessing. The series progresses to explore other moments of the journey: the seekers move, even interact. Some seem to speak, some listen and others to see beyond – all moments in the spiritual journey that have a kind of grace, when an interconnection is felt, or an insight forms which integrates our world of outer and inner being. The series ends with hints and appearances of transformation in the form and energy of being that has so powerfully been symbolized in the Indian traditions in mandalas and yantras.

Art Fair Opening

Yesterday, the India Art Fair 2012 opened at the NSIC grounds, Okhla, New Delhi. It was an eventful day filled with interesting conversations with artists, art lovers and friends, and of course, a lot of art.

The Seekers — bronze sculpture, each about 4 feet high — are displayed at the Gallerie Alternatives booth. It was just so wonderful to see people respond to them and engage with them!

Gearing up for the Art Fair!

Decided to do a thorough job of waxing and polishing the Seeker bronzes for the upcoming Art Fair in Delhi. Brought me back to the act of making them. As I moved the cloth into all the folds and crevices, it was a bit like what my fingers were doing when I made these initially in clay. The gestures of the hands have become frozen in this marvellous metal. Now for the lights at the Art Fair to find the same surface play!
